Native Korean numbers 1–99: 하나, 둘, 셋 and the short forms

Native Korean numbers are for counting: age, the hour on the clock, and how many things or people. They only go up to 99 — after that, Korean switches to Sino-Korean numbers.

1 to 10, then the tens

Learn 하나 둘 셋 넷 다섯 여섯 일곱 여덟 아홉 열 (1–10) and the tens 열 스물 서른 마흔 쉰 예순 일흔 여든 아흔 (10–90). Every other number is “tens + ones”: 34 = 서른 + 넷 = 서른넷.

Short forms before a counter

When a counter word follows, five numbers shorten — and so does any bigger number that ends in them:

Sound changes: 열여섯 (16) sounds like [열려섣], 열일곱 (17) like [열릴곱], 열넷 (14) like [열렏]. Above 50 many people use Sino numbers for big counts in casual speech (오십 개) — both are understood.

Where native numbers are used

From 100 up, counting switches to Sino numbers for the hundreds — 백 명 (100 people), and often 백스물다섯 명 or 백이십오 명 for 125.
