How the Korean keyboard works

Hangul has 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels. On the standard 2-set keyboard every one of them has its own key: consonants on the left half, vowels on the right half. You type letters in reading order — first consonant, vowel, then any bottom consonant — and the keyboard stacks them into one square syllable block. 한 is G K S; 안녕 (hello) is D K S S U D.

The lessons follow that logic: home row first (ㅁㄴㅇㄹ ㅗㅓㅏㅣ), then the top and bottom rows, Shift for double consonants (ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ), combined vowels like ㅘ, and blocks with two bottom consonants like 닭. Each lesson only uses keys you have already met. Pass a lesson with 90% accuracy — speed comes by itself.

Questions

Do I need to install a Korean keyboard first?

No. The trainer reads which key you press, so it works with your normal English keyboard settings — and also if Korean input is already turned on. To type Korean in other apps later, add the Korean keyboard once (see the keyboard layout page).

Which Korean keyboard layout is this?

The standard 2-set layout (두벌식, Dubeolsik), the national standard KS X 5002 and the default on Windows, Mac, iPhone and most Android phones. Consonants are on the left hand, vowels on the right.

What do keys per minute and words per minute mean?

Keys per minute counts correct key presses — Korean typing tests (타수) use the same idea. Words per minute counts finished Korean words. A beginner types 50–100 keys per minute; 200+ is comfortable everyday typing.

How do I type double consonants like ㄲ or ㅆ?

Hold Shift with the other hand and press the plain consonant: Shift+R = ㄲ, Shift+T = ㅆ, Shift+E = ㄸ, Shift+Q = ㅃ, Shift+W = ㅉ. Shift+O and Shift+P give ㅒ and ㅖ.

Can I practice on my phone?

Yes — tap the keys on the screen. Phone Korean keyboards usually use the same 2-set layout (on iPhone choose Korean → Standard), so what you learn here carries over.
